Margot Halstead

Helping you navigate the messy, meaningful work of communicating effectively with the people around you.

Margot's Story
Margot Halstead’s path to this work has never been linear. She has been a circus ringleader, a seven-time Buddy Poppy Queen, a two-time Maryland state champion in informational public speaking, and drum major for the Mighty Sound of Maryland. She has stood on stage with Barry Manilow and was once voted “Most Forgettable” in high school, which has aged poorly.
At first glance, those moments sound unrelated. They are not. Each one taught her something about presence, timing, attention, recovery, and what happens when people are watching. But the deeper lessons came later, in the conversations no one prepares you for: caregiving, loss, responsibility, reinvention, being misunderstood, and having to keep communicating when life has not given you time to get steady first.
That is where Margot’s work comes from. Not from theory, but from real moments: the moment before you react, before your tone changes, before judgment becomes communication, before an idea moves without you, before a conversation goes sideways. Everyone has those moments. The problem is that most people were never given practical tools to turn them into constructive conversations.
Margot built Owning Your IT around a simple premise: behavior follows thought. Today, she helps leaders, teams, and organizations recognize what is happening inside that moment and choose what happens next. Her work is practical, active, and immediately usable because it was built for the speed of real conversation. Not the conversation you wish you had. The one you are already in.
